Who are the counselors?

Ginny Stevenson is back as Woodsmoke Director for 2008. The counselors come from a wide range of backgrounds, and all have a passion for Kingswood and sharing it with children. Counselors go through an extensive application, interview and training process prior to counseling at Woodsmoke.

What does the day of a Woodsmoke camper look like?

The non-stop action of a camper's day begins with the preparation of breakfast (first thing's first!) Woodsmokers are in charge of planning, preparing and cooking most of their own meals alongside their counselors.

After breakfast, there is "morning watch," a time to reflect on the message of the day. From there, the 11th and 12th grade groups head off to the lifeguarding course (Week 1) or their service site (Week 2). The 9th and 10th grade groups head off to their service sites (see What are the Projects? below). The 7th and 8th graders will spend mornings cataloguing birds, trees and other wildlife and learning more about nature and the environment. The 5th and 6th graders will spend their morning on a hike, doing a scavenger hunt, in the craft barn, or immersed in any number of adventures.

Then it is back to the campsite for lunch, followed by a bit of downtime, and then an afternoon of swimming and boating at the lake. Dinners are either at the individual campsites or with the entire camp followed by an evening activity - Hey! Rides, star gazing, making ice cream, and finally, falling asleep in a tent with your fellow campers listening to the calls of the owls and the chirping of the frogs.

What are the High School Projects?

Traditionally, 9th through 12th grade groups have worked on projects to help improve Kingswood, such as construction of a wildlife blind and bridges on popular trails. These projects leave the kids with a lasting Kingswood legacy which they can show off to their friends and family for years to come. This year, 9th and 10th graders will measure and mark several Kingswood Trails with signage (including the Lake Trail, and trails to the Adirondack Shelter, the Hogback Deck, and Stone Ministry). The second week, the 11th and 12th grade group will construct P.E.T. vehicles (Personal Energy Transportation).

What about the Lifeguarding Course?

This year, we are trying something new. Waterfront Director Joel Freeman and his wife Paula will conduct a Red Cross Lifeguarding course for 11th and 12th graders during Week 1 of Woodsmoke (July 13-19). To participate, campers must be 15 years old by July 19, 2008. Campers will swim a lot (bring at least 2 bathing suits) and learn CPR and first aid. At the end of the week, the test will be administered and those who pass will be certified lifeguards.

Where is Woodsmoke?

Woodsmoke is at Kingswood Campsite, just outside of Hancock, New York.

When does Woodsmoke take place?

There are two, one-week long camps the last two weeks of July. The camp begins on Sunday afternoon, and the kids are picked up on the following Saturday mornings.

How much does it cost?

Woodsmoke is $450/week in 2008.
