The Dam Project
Torrential rain can wreak havoc on a community. Back in 2006, the Hancock area suffered some of the worst flooding in recent memory and so did Kingswood. Take a look at the binder in the barn sometime of the summer of 2006 and the flood that was. The destructive power of nature can be very frightening.
The Kingswood Site Committee realized that something must be done to prevent damage like that from happening again. Avoiding the worse case scenario was paramount. A loss of our dam would send a wall of water down the mountain that would cause serious destruction and the potential loss of life.
Shepherded by our resident engineer, Peter Seirup, the Dam Project committee process came up with a solution. You may have seen the display in the barn this summer detailing the history of the current dam and the plans for the new one. Bishop Park was briefed by Dave Taylor during his Woodsmoke visit in July. Work has already begun and the project will be completed this fall. We will post pictures of project construction as best as we can.
In a nutshell.....the dam will be raised six feet and a new spillway will be installed. A new emergency spillway will be added to accommodate torrential rainfall without destroying the existing dam. Overall water height will be raised about two feet. (Maybe we can dive from the dock now!)
