Please Help!

The Pines is the name of our newest campsite at Kingswood. Its name has evolved as the site has evolved. It started as the limited mobility site, and then became known as the access friendly site before the final name was selected. “The Pines” is a name that makes this site blend in with our other site names like Orchard, Tamarack and Maples, yet it is important to make known how different this site is from the other sites.

This special site was the idea of a volunteer, Geri Mariano. Geri loves Kingswood, but she has limited mobility and would require a site that is a little more access friendly in order to fully enjoy what Kingswood has to offer. Her dream was for Kingswood to someday have a campsite that would allow more folks to be able to enjoy camping for the first time or to be able to continue camping after a decline in their mobility. That day is now!

If you have had knee surgery, a hip replaced, walk with a cane or walker, had back surgery, or anything else that affects your ability to walk on uneven surfaces or for long distances, The Pines may be just what the doctor ordered! Maybe your health is in tip top shape, but you have a relative who may not be as mobile as they used to be. This site may be perfect. Please help spread the word.

Physical Description:

The Pines is located across from Orchard. As you drive up the hill it is the only campsite on the left side of the hill. It has a beautiful view across the valley. You look out on a field with the farmhouse in the distance.

The layout of the tent, the kitchen area, fire pit, driveway and latrine are close together. No great distances to walk. All of these features are on the same level. There are no steps, including into the tent and the latrine. The walking surface throughout the site is compact crushed rock. In the kitchen area it is so smooth and compact that it appears as though it is concrete.

The kitchen includes special features not found in our other sites or at most any other campground. It includes a box in which to store your food, safe from animals. This way you do not have to move your food back and forth from your car as you do at other campsites. It also includes the water source being attached to a sink at counter top height (32”). Most campgrounds have a water spigot somewhere near by that is low to the ground.
In addition, the picnic table height is at 30 inches and the benches are 19 inches from the ground. The picnic table is designed with the legs set closer to the inside to allow people to slide in from the end. This does not require one to lift their leg over the bench in order to sit. This also allows a chair to be pulled up to the end of the table with comfortable leg room.

The kitchen area fire pit is raised up to allow campfire cooking without bending down so low. There are counter tops at two heights to allow for your choice in work surfaces. One is at 36 inches and the other, including the sink is at 32 inches. Last, like any of our equipped sites the kitchen has dishes, utensils, pots and pans, as well as a propane stove. No need to pack and haul all of this camping equipment.

The tent includes 2 single beds at 19 inches, plus a four inch mattress. These beds may be pushed together to make a double bed. They were designed a little higher then our standard beds to allow for less bending. It also includes 2 pair of our standard design bunk beds. Though there is nothing standard about our design. The top bunks stand alone allowing the bottom bunks to be slid out from underneath the top bunk and used as single beds. The tent sleeps a total of 6 people and has 2- six inch mattresses and 4- four inch mattresses. It also includes a bench type storage space with a low shelf and two night stands.

The last, but perhaps most important feature is the latrine. It is designed with a wider-36 inch door, more floor space, a higher toilet seat (17 inches) and it is equipped with 2 – grab bars.

If this sounds like a campsite in which you would be comfortable please call for a reservation and ask any additional question you may have. We would like you to be able to enjoy more than just your campsite.

Please ask about closer parking for access to the lower barn (our social center), the craft area, and swim area. “Oasis” our bathhouse will have level access by summer 2012. There will no longer be a step to get into the shower and toilet facility.
